Lion Diet for Autoimmune Disease: Arthritis, IBD, Psoriasis, MS, and More

My experience: lifelong autoimmune arthritis

I was born in 1992. My dad used to pick me up and put me on his shoulders when I was about two — when he took me off, I would sit down and cry. We now think it was the first sign of hip pain.

By age six, I started lagging behind my parents and younger brother when we were walking. I had a hard time waking up in the morning. By the time we figured out what was happening, the diagnosis was juvenile idiopathic arthritis — eventually severe enough that I needed a hip replacement at 17 and an ankle replacement at 25. My full childhood arthritis story is here.

By 2015, before I figured out the food connection, I had: arthritis in my right wrist, both shoulders, right knee, right big toe, both thumbs, both sides of my jaw, finger joints, both elbows, lower back. I was worried I was headed for a wrist replacement. I was also dealing with: severe chronic fatigue, itching skin, mouth ulcers, severe blistering rashes, cystic acne, dyshidrotic eczema, restless leg syndrome, severe depression and anxiety. Medications: Enbrel, Methotrexate, Tylenol 3, Adderall, Cipralex, Dapsone, Valacyclovir. The full timeline of how I figured out the food connection is here.

Within a year of starting an elimination approach, then the Lion Diet, all of that was either resolved or massively improved.

Why an elimination diet helps autoimmune disease

The core mechanism, as I understand it, is type III hypersensitivity reactions — also called immune complex-mediated hypersensitivity. Here's how it works:

You develop antibodies to a specific protein. For me — and a ton of other people who don't realize it — that's a whole slew of different foods, preservatives, dyes, etc. When the antibodies circulate in your body, they form immune complexes with the protein acting as the antigen. After a couple of days to a week, symptoms occur: fever, weakness, generalized swelling, joint pain, acne, itchiness, depression, fatigue, anxiety, sweating.

These immune complexes accumulate in tissues and can contribute to the pathogenesis of many other conditions — autoimmune disorders, hepatitis, malaria, and (I believe) depression and anxiety. Clinical effects subside when the antigen has been completely broken down. Unfortunately, this can take almost a month — and if you eat something else your body forms immune complexes to, you just keep reacting and you never get better. The immune complexes build up in your tissues and you get tissue damage. Full explanation here.

The Lion Diet works because it strips diet down to the foods least likely to trigger an immune response — ruminant meat and salt. Once you remove the trigger foods, the immune complexes clear and the tissue damage stops accumulating. Symptoms can begin lifting within weeks.

Timeline: how long until symptoms begin to subside?

It depends on the symptom and on how much damage has already occurred.

If someone is treating your autoimmune symptoms with a diet and they tell you it takes 2 years to maybe have an impact, there's something wrong with the diet. Relief should come sooner.

Specific autoimmune conditions

Arthritis (rheumatoid, juvenile idiopathic, psoriatic)

This is the one I have direct experience with. My arthritis was severe enough to require joint replacements before I figured out the food connection. Once on the Lion Diet, the active inflammation in every still-functional joint resolved. Damaged joints (my ankle and hip) needed surgery — diet can stop inflammation but can't rebuild cartilage that's already gone. If you have arthritis and you don't yet have permanent joint damage, this diet may be the most leveraged intervention you can make. See success stories: Jessica (39), Janice (42), Kelly (47).

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's, ulcerative colitis)

The Lion Diet eliminates virtually every dietary trigger known to flare IBD — gluten, dairy, eggs, plant fiber, lectins, FODMAPs, processed seasonings. Many people with IBD report substantial reduction in symptoms within the first 1–2 weeks. See success stories: Chris (28) — Crohn's + colitis, Pascal (25) — colitis.

Eczema and psoriasis

These are some of the most consistently responsive conditions on the Lion Diet — many people see substantial clearing within 4–6 weeks. See success stories: Liam (21) — psoriasis, 5 weeks, Jack (22) — eczema and psoriasis, 6 weeks, Anthony (39) — eczema, 11 months, Behnaz (23) — eczema, 5 months, Caroline (52) — eczema, 14 months.

Multiple Sclerosis

The same type III hypersensitivity mechanism that drives joint inflammation can also drive nerve sheath inflammation. The Lion Diet's safety profile is well-documented for autoimmune presentations of MS. See success story: Emily (43) — MS, 3.5 years on the diet.

Hashimoto's and autoimmune thyroid disease

Thyroid antibodies are typically driven by gluten and other inflammatory triggers. The Lion Diet eliminates these. See: Sally (60) — Hashimoto's, 2 years on the diet.

Alopecia areata (autoimmune hair loss)

Alopecia is an autoimmune illness and the Lion Diet's specialty is helping those with autoimmune issues. Just like any other autoimmune illness, once the gut is healed and the leakiness ceases, the body returns to its natural state. Many have recovered lost hair (and even color) on all-meat diets. More on alopecia and the Lion Diet. See success story: Tristan (23) — alopecia + eczema, 4 months.

Why the Lion Diet beats other elimination diets for autoimmune

I tried other elimination diets before the Lion Diet — AIP (autoimmune protocol), gluten-free, dairy-free, the GAPS diet, paleo. Each one helped a little, but the symptoms always came back. The problem was that I was still reacting to foods within those diets — to vegetables, to eggs, to nuts, to spices I hadn't identified yet.

The Lion Diet works because it strips dietary input down to the absolute minimum: only ruminant meat (beef, lamb, goat, bison, deer) plus salt and water. If you're still having symptoms on the Lion Diet, the trigger is almost certainly NOT food — it's environmental (mold, biotoxins), medication-related, or hormonal.

That's also why the Lion Diet is so useful as a diagnostic. Once symptoms clear on the Lion Diet, you can reintroduce one food at a time and identify exactly which foods you react to.

Important: rule out the environment too

If you start the Lion Diet for autoimmune symptoms and don't see improvement in 6 weeks, the most common reason is water damage / mold in your environment. Biotoxins from mold trigger the same type of immune response as inflammatory foods. Symptoms can be indistinguishable. After you start the diet and ideally feel some relief, scour your house for water damage and mold. I would do an environmental clean and buy air filters just to mitigate this possibility — and either way it's a healthier way to live. More info on biotoxin testing and house cleaning.

How to start

Read the Get Started guide — it covers what to eat, what to avoid, what to expect in the first few weeks, supplements, electrolytes, and how to transition.

If you're currently on immunosuppressant medication for an autoimmune disease, do not stop or reduce your medication on your own. The diet can be started while on medication; once symptoms improve, work with your prescriber on a tapering plan.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take until joint pain begins to subside?

About a month, sometimes less, if the pain is from active inflammation. If you don't see improvement in 3 months, the underlying issue may be joint damage rather than active inflammation. More detail.

Can the Lion Diet help with autoimmune-related alopecia?

Absolutely. Alopecia is an autoimmune illness and many people have recovered lost hair (and even pigment) on all-meat diets. More detail.

Should I go carnivore or do the Lion Diet?

For severe autoimmune symptoms, the Lion Diet (ruminant meat + salt + water only) is the safer starting point. Broader carnivore (poultry, eggs, dairy) can still trigger symptoms in highly reactive people. Once symptoms resolve on the Lion Diet, you can reintroduce other carnivore foods one at a time. More detail.

What if the diet isn't working for my autoimmune symptoms?

The most common causes: (1) hidden contamination — eating out, processed seasonings, supplements, even toothpaste; (2) water-damaged environment (mold/biotoxins) — see biotoxin.com; (3) untreated psych med withdrawal; (4) hormonal or thyroid issues that need separate evaluation. More detail.

This is not medical advice. The Lion Diet helped me and many other people with autoimmune symptoms, but autoimmune disease is serious and every body is different. Do not stop or modify prescribed medication without talking to your prescriber. Find a clinician who is willing to work with dietary interventions alongside whatever protocol you're on.
